Understanding the Cutoff Rank

The cutoff rank is the last rank of a student who gets admission to a particular engineering program after all the merit lists are published. Since each program has a limited number of seats, students are selected based on their entrance exam rank. Initially, the top-ranked students are selected in the 1st list. If some students don’t accept their seats, those seats become vacant, and additional lists (2nd, 3rd, etc.) are published to fill them. The cutoff rank is the highest (worst) rank that still managed to get admission in the final list.

For example, if the 3rd list for Civil Engineering (Regular) ends at rank 303, that means 303 is the cutoff, and anyone with a better rank (like 250 or 280) likely got selected.

Your Chances Based on Rank

- If your rank is better than the cutoff, you have a very high chance of getting a seat.
- If your rank is within ±15–20% of the total number of seats, you’re in the chance zone.
- If your rank is more than 25% higher than the cutoff, there’s only a small hope not a real chance.

Note: This 15–25% range is an estimate based on past trends and can vary depending on the number of applicants. For colleges outside Pulchowk, it also depends on how many students choose Pulchowk as their first choice.
