Geomatic Engineering
Why Geomatic Engineering?
Geomatics engineering students study surveying techniques for land, cadastral, aerial, mining
and engineering survey. They serve society by collecting, monitoring, archiving and maintaining diverse
spatial data infrastructures. Geomatics engineers utilize a wide range of technologically advanced tools
such as digital theodolite, distance meter, total stations, Global Positioning System(GPS) equipment, digital
aerial imagery (both satellite and air-borne) and Geographic Information System(GIS). These toots enable the
Geomatics Engineer to gather, analyze and manage spatially related information to solve a wide range of technical
and societal problems along with Land Administration & Land Resources Management. This engineering program has
strong components of field surveying in every odd semester.
What is Geomatic Engineering?
Geomatic(Surveying) Engineering is an emerging information technology in the 21st century. Geomatic deals with the acquisition, modeling, analysis and management of spatial data and includes exciting applications such as positioning by satellites, remote sensing, land surveying and geospatial information management. Geomatic is one of the fastest growing information sciences in Nepal and throughout the world. Prior to mid 90’s, this program was known as “Surveying Technology”. “Geomatic” is a term that is currently used by educational institutions, governments and private industry. It goes beyond commonly known or traditional areas of surveying and mapping and includes a much wider range of activities and the use of rapidly changing technologies that relate to collecting, managing using information for the development purposes.
